How I took this shot

These images are of a waterfall that I shot using a long exposure of 0.8s with a stopped down lens. I wanted to try a longer exposure but the image became over-exposed if I went over 0.8s. The only way to get a longer exposure would be to use neutral density filters.

Assessment of the images

I like the effect of the blurred water, its soft texture contrasts well against the sharper texture of the rocks and the log. The blurriness of the water gives the feeling of its movement. I think the portrait shot is more successful than the landscape one because it cuts out the scruffy plants that can distract, it also zooms in more closely to the water and magnifies the effect of the waterfall. I also notice that the portrait photo is cut into three evenly spaced diagonal stripes. Which seems to make the image feel balanced and encourages the eye to travel right to left across the picture following the flow of the water. Also the water looks like it is pouring down from the top corner, which draws our eye to it, and adds to the feeling of movemet in the picture.
