location 4 - Heron

How I took this shot

I was originally aiming for a shot of this heron flying from the reeds up to the branch where you see him in this image. I had to walk to the other side of the lake to have any chance of catching him, and I set my camera to auto focus because I felt I would not have time to make adjustments once he flew. However auto-focus focussed on the branches and so I missed the shot of the heron flying anyway. Because of this I don't use the auto-mode anymore, instead I use aperture priority or manual.

Assessment of the image

The blurred leaves around the edges of the image are because I used a wide f-stop. I like the effect because it makes the image more interesting when it is framed with blurs like this. Again there is a lot of contrast in this image with the heron's grey plumage standing out against the green foliage.
